Creed is Gowing Like a ... Zucchini!

SO sweet!

Creed was so happy and wiggly that he wouldn't hold still for the picture.

Creed, wearing Grandpa's Souvenir hat from Europe. It fits Grandpa much better.

Sparkly eyes-- The flash surprised him, so they look a little bit like crazy eyes too.

I honestly cant believe how fast this little boy is growing up. He is already 16 weeks old!!! I had to dress him in a 6-9 month outfit this morning (sniffle) because the others were getting too small. I thought I still had a newborn until I saw one at church the other day, and realized that my baby didn't look like that anymore (double sniffle). I am grateful that I have a healthy little (or should I say BIG) boy. He is so sweet and happy and patient. He is very mellow, and social. I have spent nearly every waking -- and many half-sleeping--seconds with this little guy. He is my little side-kick. It has been so fun to watch him grow and develop into such a cute little man. I left him with Ryan the other night to go visiting teaching, and upon my return, met an excited group of kids telling me that Creed had rolled over while I was gone. Seriously??? I can't believe I missed it. I decided it doesn't count until I witness it with my own eyes. I guess I should be thrilled that he learned to roll over (allegedly), because every time I lay him down, it is only a matter of seconds before he is picked up by a loving brother or sister. I didn't think Creed would have a chance to roll over until he was at least 6 years old... maybe longer... so he is already exceeding my expectations (little over-achiever). I am just so happy to be his mommy, and to have such sweet little ones in my care.
How did I not see this zucchini in my garden until it got this huge?  It was hiding under a leaf bullying my pepper plant!

Karen's First Day of Pre-school

Karen gets to go to preschool at Burton Elementary. She really loves going. She tells me that she likes playing in the gym, but I hear from her teachers that she spends most of her time playing dollies and kitchen. She looked so cute in her "school outfit". I sure love this little sweetheart.
I sure miss her when she is gone, but I am excited that she gets to branch out and experience the world a little bit. She has such a fun little personality, it would be selfish of me not to let her share it with others.

Happy Birthday Michelle!

Today is my baby sisters birthday. She was born 20 years ago!!! I can still remember the first time I laid eyes on her in the hospital. She was such a little bundle of pink. It has been so fun to watch her grow and develop into an amazing woman. She is such a fun sister. She has helped me be a better mother. She has enriched my life more than she knows. I cant be with her for her birthday-- which makes me sad. So today-- on her 20th birthday, I am sending her some birthday laughs. These are not pictures I would normally share-- in fact, I cant guarantee that they wont be deleted before the week is through-- but for you, Michelle,enjoy...
(not pee-- just "golden" food coloring)

Karens face... sad.

Someday. . .

Someday I will only have to clean my living room once a day, instead of once an hour.
Someday I will make a meal, and nobody will complain about what we are having.
Someday all of my Tupperware will be in the cupboard, as opposed to strewn all over the backyard.
Someday I will look in the bathroom mirror and see my face, not a haze of tiny fingerprints & toothpaste splatters.
Someday I will sleep all night long.
Someday "running" errands will actually be more like running, instead of a slow crawl.

I'm pretty sure that when that very "someday" comes, I will be wishing for little mouths to share my "yucky" food with. I will miss the backpacks, blankets, tiny socks and shoes littered through my home. I will long for the days of my Tupperware pieces turning up filled with crazy concoctions, and my lipstick looking like smashed goop. And yes-- my heart may even ache for a baby or two to drag me out of bed in the middle of the night.

Someday, I will yearn for this day.

I sure hope that "someday" takes a very long time to get here.

The Girls Cabin Get-a-Way!

My girls spent the weekend at the cabin-- with my grandparents, parents, 3 sisters, brother, and their cousins (yes... I felt left out).  The cabin is one of the most wonderful places on earth. They had such a fun time. They played on the playground. They had  a great time with their cousins. They saw some wildlife (well, a chipmunk at least). They went to West Yellowstone. When I asked their favorite part, they both said "The food!" My grandma, and mother are both excellent cooks.

We missed them, and were so happy to see them return on Monday afternoon. About an hour after my family left to head back home, Kailani started to cry. I thought it was because she was happy to be home-- I was wrong. She was missing her Grandma. She told me that she wished Grandma was her mom. I can't lie-- at first, it hurt my feelings. However, after thinking about it, I realized it was an honest and sincere statement. My mother is about as perfect as they come, and I am far from perfect. Kailani is a smart girl, I dont blame her for wishing that.

I am happy my girls had the experience. I have so many fond cabin memories. I have so many fond cousin memories. I have so many fun grandparent memories.  I am so happy they are creating some too!

The Important Role of Mothers

It was my turn to teach Relief Society again... lucky me. I taught on the importance of motherhood-- or,more precicely, how to use the scriptures and words of our church leaders to become better mothers. Here it is:

Jesus said, “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father ,which is in heaven, is perfect” I know that he doesn’t expect us to become perfect in this world,-- but-, while we are on earth, he does want us to try our best and seek perfection.

In an Ensign article (April 2006) Pres. Thomas S. Monson talked about Becoming Our Best Selves he quoted the savior when he said:
“What manner of men ought ye to be? Verily I say unto you, even as I am.” In His earthly ministry, the Master outlined how we should live, how we should teach, how we should serve, and what we should do so that we could become our best selves.”

Pres. Gordon B. Hinckley was always encouraging us with sayings like
“Stand a little taller and work a little harder, rise a little higher, be a little better. Make the extra effort. You will be happier. You will know a new satisfaction, a new gladness in your heart” and in his article The Quest for Excellence, he said: We are of the family of God, with such a tremendous potential for excellence. The distance between mediocrity and excellence can be ever so small. The little extra effort we make becomes such a tremendous difference.”

I think, as women, it is a natural tendency to want to be excellent in all we do… and, in turn, I think it is also a natural tendency for us to be extremely hard on ourselves when we fall short of our high expectations. Satan is well aware of this vulnerability, and fully utilizes every opportunity we allow him to make us feel like our efforts as wives, mothers, daughters, and so on, is all in vain. He wants us to give up. He wants us to feel like our best is not enough and improvement is not possible. However, we know, as daughters of God, that we are here on earth to grow and strive for our divine potential. If there is something, as a wife or mother, that we are not pleased with… we can work on it, and become better.

So, how do we become our best selves? The world would have us read and study the concepts of scholars and specialists. (show books)These books can be interesting, and helpful, and even problem solving. I don’t discount them. However, President Boyd K Packer has said, “Understanding true doctrine can change behavior faster than the study of behavior will ever change behavior.” In other words, the fastest way to change something we don’t like about our behavior is to study, and come to understand, true doctrine.

So where do we learn true doctrine? Through studying the scriptures and words of modern day prophets. (show scriptures and Ensign)

Heavenly Father wants us, as wives and mothers, to be our best. He knows that it is not always easy-- but he does not want us to feel discouraged. He inspires our church leaders to give us the counsel that is needed for the times we live in. They are words of encouragement, not condemnation. They are meant to lift and inspire us to be our best selves.

As I listened to conference in April, I was amazed at how many talks were focused on the important role of motherhood. I know that there are no assigned topics, so that tells me that with ten talks about motherhood we need to listen and act upon the things we are being taught. In this wicked world there is a greater need for righteous mothers teaching their children by word and by deed. These talks can help us know how to be better mothers. They are meant to lift us and encourage us to be better, not to make us feel inadequate or lacking. We can listen to these talks and allow Lucifer to make us feel like a failure and disappointment to our Heavenly Father, or we can look at them as the “true doctrine” that they are and use them as a guide to do better and be better.

As I have studied and prayed about these 10 talks, my gratitude for inspired leaders and our loving Heavenly Father has grown more than I can say. I was trying to decide what parts of each talk would be the most important for me to share. And I realized for everyone that answer would be different. Because of that I have asked some sisters to share their feelings about specific talks and I have given them the impossible task of doing it in one minute. I am sorry we don’t have more time but I hope it inspires each of us to study them for ourselves. As we do so, I promise that Heavenly Father will strengthen us, and help us become the women and mothers we desire to be.

Thank you so much for your time and efforts in preparing and sharing your thoughts and feelings. You all did so much better than I could have ever done. Thank you.

In closing, I testify the scriptures and words of our church leaders, are the best “self-help manual“ or parenting handbook available. As we study the true doctrine they contain, they will change us, and shape us into the women we desire to be. (Show, and pass out little scripture handout). We are Heavenly Fathers children, our children are His children, and He loves them and wants all of us to return to Him. I know Satan delights in discouraging the work of Mother's. He likes to whisper words of doubt in our ears, and make us feel like our efforts are in vain. I know many times I have felt so inadequate and like my precious children deserved so much more for a Mother than what they were given. I absolutely love being a Mother-Sometimes it is more fun than others and some times it is not fun at all- But it is all I have ever wanted for myself. I wish I was better at it-- more patient, more soft, more kind-- more righteous, more many things. However... when I think of it as a "partnership" with Heavenly Father, I am reminded that I am not doing this alone. I can go to Him for guidance and strength. He can change me into who I hope to be. My efforts matter to Him, and to me, that makes ALL the difference.
I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
