Cress Creek Hike

We went hiking last Saturday at Cress Creek. We went with a group of Ryan's students. It was fun to be with them-- they really are such an amazing group of young people. It was a beautiful day. One of Ryan's students, Valerie, took a few pictures while we were there. I think they turned out great!

Creed is 2!!!!!

My baby is 2! When did this happen? He is growing and changing so quickly. The past two years have been completely delightful. He is such a sweet and cuddly little guy.  I love this little man so much.

He has been excited about his birthday all week. I really wanted to spend the day doing some of the things he loves best. He started the day by opening his gifts, and playing with his new toys.

Then he spent a little time in his birthday suit.

He went to the park to play with his new soccer ball. He had a picnic there too.

He had some delicious cake and ice cream. He loved hearing us sing to him, and was very excited to blow out the candles.

A few things about Creed as a 2 year old:
His favorite foods are cereal, string cheese, candy, and any meal his mother is eating.
His favorite color is pink (he calls just about every color "pink").
His favorite movie is Disney's Cars -- he would watch it 5 times a day if we let him!
He loves being with his family, and hates to be left home.
He loves balloons, his silkie, and his pluggie.
He is a very clear little speaker. He likes to tell the cat to "Shoo Shady!", He  says "I love you", "Ooooh, Yuck!"  and "See ya, Bye." He has a funny little sense of humor, and actually comes up with little jokes that keep us all laughing.
He likes to snuggle in bed with his Mother. Every night he needs a little snuggle time before he goes to his own bed. He also likes to be held, and cuddle throughout the day. What a lucky Mama I am!!!
He is such a special part of our family, and brings us all so much happiness.
Happy Birthday little buddy!

My Little Entrepreneurs

It appears this summer may have a bit of a theme. My children seem to be obsessed with ways that they can earn money. Within the first week, my children had come up with a handful of  money making plans.

Plan #1: Kailani wanted to make flyers to take around advertising her babysitting business. I told her that she might still be a little young for that, but that she could babysit for me anytime.

Plan #2: The next day, Kailani, Kyle, and Karen went door to door at the dorms offering to take out garbage for the girls living there. They charged 50 cents. In 2 hours they made $1.66 each. It was hard work, but they enjoyed it.

Plan#3: In an attempt to deter the kids from being "garbage collectors" again, Ryan and I offered to let the children pick up the pine cones off the lawn in the backyard. When Ryan mows the lawn, the pine cones make him a little crazy. We told them we would pay a penny per pine cone. Karen jumped on the deal immediately. Within a half an hour she had picked up 500 pine cones (and hadn't even made a dent in the number still laying on the grass). Once the others saw how easy it was for her, they started picking up pine cones too. Ryan and I started to sweat a bit when we realized how costly this was becoming, so we had to revise our deal a bit, and add a $10 cap and an "only once a week" stipulation.  In the end, there were around 3,000 pine cones removed from the lawn.

Plan #4: On the 4th day of Summer, the children were begging to set up a lemonade stand. I told them that would be fine if they paid for all the supplies. We went to Walmart, and bought a poster, some lemonade, sodas, cups, and ice. It ended up costing around $4 each child. The children washed the wagon, and hauled their supplies to the corner (after calling and asking the owner for permission). Within seconds of setting up, they had a couple customers. After an hour, they had to run home to restock, and within 2 hours, they had sold out all of their supplies, and made nearly $40! I couldn't believe it. I am pretty sure this was their favorite (and easiest) business of all.
I can't wait to see what else these brilliant little minds come up with!

Starting The Summer Off With A Little Blizzard

The first day of Summer, we headed up to the cabin with my parents. We were so excited to stay there for a couple days. We spent most of our time inside, because it ended up being a very cold weekend. Not to mention the fact that the playground had a little issue...

We had so much fun playing board games, coloring pictures, watching movies, eating, and doing "nothing". The simplicity was refreshing. Sometimes I think it would be a tiny sliver of heaven to shut out the world, home school my children, and live there all year with my sweet little family.  I think I would love it-- at least until the "cabin fever" set in.  Every time I go to the cabin, I am so amazed at the beauty of this earth. It truly is one of my favorite places to be.

Cameron and Kyle were so fun to watch as they "explored." They were fascinated with the snow sliding off of the tin roofs. They had all sorts of methods to get it to slide, but the most effective was yelling "Pontipee" (as in the brothers from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers), and causing an avalanche.

PONTIPEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

End of School Programs

May is always such a busy month-- almost too busy to fully enjoy with my head spinning and thoughts running every direction. However, one thing that I always enjoy in May is watching my children in each of their end of school programs. It is so fun to see them shine, and their little personalities blossom.

Kyle had a learning fair. He chose to do his report on Amelia Earhart. When Ryan and I went to see him present his report, we were surprised to hear him (in his best female voice) say, "Hello, I'm Amelia Earhart..." Ryan and I instructed him instead to say, "This is Amelia Earhart" (while pointing to his poster). Kyle told us that he couldn't do that because each student was given strict instructions that they were to present as if they were their learning fair character.  For the rest of the day, Ryan and I had to laugh every time we thought of our little "Amelia" doing his report. Lucky for us, Amelia Earhart was a bit of a masculine female. I suppose we are lucky he didn't do his report  on Marilyn Monroe or Minnie Mouse (both characters featured at the learning fair). Phewww! Dodged that bullet!

Kailani's class preformed "Aesop's Fables". She was the tortoise--you know the one who beats the hare... slow and steady wins the race. She was a great little turtle, and did so good as her super slow run across the stage.

Karen had her Kindergarten Author's Tea. She sang some lovely songs, and read a page she wrote about her favorite memory from the year. She wrote about being Dorothy for her Halloween party.

It has been a good school year. My children had wonderful teachers. I am so excited to have my children home for the next three months. Ive been counting down the days! Let the party begin!
